About the role
Octopus Energy Trading is focused on helping reshape the energy landscape through innovative trading approaches that support the move toward a net zero future. As the company expands solutions around renewables, electric vehicle charging, grid-scale batteries, and other flexible energy assets, this role will help measure and improve how those optimisations perform.
The Performance Analyst will join the asset optimisation team and work alongside commercial and technical optimisation specialists. This position is suited to someone who enjoys working with data, explaining patterns clearly, and using analysis to improve trading performance across flexibility assets ranging from residential systems to large-scale battery energy storage.
You will build reporting and monitoring frameworks, define performance measures, and uncover what is working well, what needs improvement, and where the business should focus next. The insights from your work will directly inform development priorities and strategic decisions.
What you’ll do
- Act as a trusted source of performance insight for flexible assets, helping the team understand results, identify gaps, and shape strategy.
- Develop and maintain reporting and monitoring tools that track optimisation performance for both automated strategies and human trading decisions.
- Carry out detailed analysis of trading and optimisation approaches to spot trends, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to improve.
- Turn complex analysis into practical, easy-to-understand recommendations for different audiences, including traders, developers, and battery operations teams.
- Improve the quality, accuracy, and accessibility of performance-related data.
- Look for weaknesses in current measurement and monitoring methods and propose better ways of tracking performance.
- Research market developments, competitor activity, and emerging opportunities to support commercial planning and decision-making.
- Work closely with commercial colleagues, data scientists, and traders to strengthen team collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
- Adapt to evolving priorities and take on new challenges as the business grows.
What you need
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with confidence handling large and complex data sets in data-intensive settings.
- Hands-on experience with quantitative or statistical work using Python.
- Working knowledge of Git, CI/CD tools, and SQL.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- A curious, proactive approach and a willingness to question assumptions and investigate issues deeply.
- Comfort managing several tasks at once in a fast-changing environment.
- A simplifying mindset, with a preference for scalable, automated solutions over manual workarounds.
- Excellent attention to detail and a structured, organised way of working.
- A collaborative, positive attitude and an interest in working across technical and commercial teams.
- Strong personal alignment with decarbonisation and the energy transition.
