Role Overview

Tata Electronics is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of device enclosure and mechanism design. The role focuses on developing high-precision external housings and internal structural parts for electronic products, while ensuring the designs are practical to manufacture, reliable in use, and aligned with quality and appearance requirements.

Experience Required

This position requires 8 to 14 years of relevant experience.

Educational Qualification

A B.Tech / B.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.

Technical Expertise

  • Solid understanding of core mechanical engineering concepts, including mechanisms, machine elements, tolerance stack-up studies, and GD&T.
  • Background in designing enclosure and chassis components such as A-cover, C-cover, and D-cover parts for electronic products or similar applications.
  • Experience creating hinge and other kinematic mechanism designs with controlled torque and friction so devices open and close smoothly with one finger and without base lift.
  • Capability in developing internal frames, brackets, and stiffening features to properly support PCBs and modules.
  • Working knowledge of injection molding, metal casting, CNC machining, and sheet metal fabrication processes.
  • Understanding of surface treatments and finishing methods.

Tools and Design Systems

  • Strong ability in 3D CAD modelling and drafting, including large assembly management and the preparation of fully dimensioned 2D drawings with GD&T.
  • Experience using FEA/CAE software such as ANSYS or Abaqus for structural, thermal, and kinematic studies.
  • Ability to perform tolerance calculations or use tolerance analysis software.
  • Familiarity with PLM/PDM platforms for revision tracking and BOM control.

Special Requirements

  • Prior exposure to consumer electronics or precision enclosure design and manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of high-volume production expectations and validation standards such as drop testing, thermal testing, and ingress protection.
  • Willingness to collaborate closely with manufacturing teams and suppliers, including travel to vendor or factory locations for tooling reviews, production trials, and issue closure when needed.
  • Awareness of mechanical component standards and compliance requirements, including safety, material, environmental, ROHS, and REACH considerations, along with internal quality and appearance benchmarks.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to coordinate cross-functional teams effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capability for technical and operational issues.
  • Customer-oriented mindset with the ability to build trust and long-term working relationships.
  • Adaptable, proactive, and able to work effectively under demanding timelines.

Job Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design work for device enclosures and mechanisms, covering both outer housings and internal structures.
  • Create detailed designs for A-cover, C-cover, D-cover, and other housing components, including mounts, ribs, bosses, gaskets, and fasteners.
  • Develop complex hinge systems and other moving assemblies, defining torque, spring force, damping, and material choices for smooth operation and long service life.
  • Design internal frames, brackets, and reinforcement features that secure PCBs, connectors, and modules inside the device.
  • Partner with fabrication teams to build prototypes and first articles for mechanical parts.
  • Share design requirements with suppliers and review their tooling designs, including molds, dies, and fixtures, to ensure compliance.
  • Support manufacturing ramp-up by troubleshooting build issues and approving engineering changes to meet schedule and quality targets.
  • Verify that all mechanical designs satisfy quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuously improve design practices by capturing learnings from current projects and turning them into future guidelines and best practices.

Additional Information

This role sits within a product design and manufacturing environment where engineering decisions must balance innovation, performance, user experience, manufacturability, and scalable production. Close coordination with cross-functional teams is essential to deliver robust mechanical solutions.
