About Campus Safety and Emergency Services
Campus Safety and Emergency Services operates with a strong focus on dignity, respect, professional standards, personal growth, community partnerships, and activities that support safety, security, and quality of life across the diverse university community.
Role Overview
As a Special Constable, you will help preserve and strengthen community safety and security within the Western Special Constable Services community engagement model, the university’s mission, and the agreement with the London Police Services Board. The role emphasizes building positive partnerships with the university community while delivering respectful, professional service.
Working Hours and Pay
This is a regular full-time position with 40 hours per week. The hourly pay range is $32.27 to $42.41, and the starting rate will depend on the selected candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Support the safety and security of the university community in line with Western Special Constable Services standards.
- Promote collaboration and positive relationships between Special Constables and campus community members.
- Provide courteous, professional service while responding to concerns and supporting community needs.
Qualifications
Education: A college diploma, university degree, or Ontario Police College training, or an equivalent qualification, is required.
Experience: Prior experience as a police officer or special constable is preferred.
Skills and abilities: The role calls for a strong understanding of security and security systems, excellent organization and time management, solid customer service ability, strong verbal and written communication, good keyboarding and computer skills, and the ability to work effectively with people at every level of the organization and with the public. Candidates should also bring sound judgement, diplomacy, crisis management and conflict resolution capability, a welcoming and service-oriented approach, and the ability to build trust with people from varied backgrounds and beliefs. Physical capability to lift and carry up to 25 kg and push or pull up to 15 kg of force is also required.
Eligibility and Mandatory Requirements
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens.
- Candidates must be at least 21 years old.
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence is required, with no more than six accumulated demerit points and full driving privileges in Ontario.
- Applicants must not have an unresolved criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted, and must have no criminal charges currently before the courts.
- Current CPR and first aid certification is required, or the ability to complete it before the employment offer is made.
Background Checks and Assessments
Successful applicants will undergo both physical and psychological assessments with a professional approved by Western. A background review will also be completed.
